Day Zero Tulum 2027: the party that sets the bar for all the others
By Charli López, founder of MATIE · been more than once · updated September 26, 2026

They call it the Mexican Burning Man, and that's not an exaggeration. After hearing so much about Day Zero, I once "lost" my ticket on purpose. Everybody kept telling me that once you've gone, the bar is set so high that other parties never hit the same: you stop enjoying them for a while because you keep comparing. When I finally went for it, it was everything they said and more.
When and what is Day Zero Tulum 2027
Day Zero started in 2012, around the end of the Maya calendar, and it's been curated by Damian Lazarus on his Crosstown Rebels label ever since. It's not part of Zamna. It's its own event: one ritual night, sunset to sunrise, deep in the Tulum jungle.
January 9, 2027 · "Begin Again"
The lineup already adds up to 40+ names: Damian Lazarus, &ME, Tiga, Vintage Culture, LP Giobbi, Chloé Caillet, Culoe De Song, Robag Wruhme, Victor Calderone, Jane Fitz and Mita Gami, among others, plus live acts like RPR Soundsystem. Tickets go through Day Zero's official platform; the lineup may keep growing before the event.
What it feels like, from someone who's been
When I finally went, it reminded me a bit of Mayan Warrior: people who are really there for the party, not for the trend or the photo. You meet the people who live for this. The vibe is hard to put into words, out in the middle of the jungle, and the way I understand it, it's about going back to the beginning, to the most basic feelings and sensations.
Everything you see in there can throw you off, because it's a lot, but if you go in with an open mind, it's a reset. It helps you see things differently. It's a spiritual trip where everybody's free and nobody's judging, with a lot of connection to Maya culture: they try to bring our culture together with the music and build a bridge between the two. I also got to see Solomun play there, alongside Damian Lazarus, the visionary behind all of it. (Heads up: that was a past edition. It doesn't mean he's announced for 2027.)
The sound: melodic, organic house and techno
It's curation, not a single genre: house and techno with a soft spot for the melodic, the organic and the atmospheric. And here's something almost nobody tells you: these parties run all night, until the sun comes up. Watching the sunrise while you're dancing in the middle of the jungle, near the ruins, hits with a serious charge of energy. The Maya were there for a reason, and if they knew one thing, it was how to live well.
Who this party is for
We don't recommend it as your first Tulum party. If you've already been to other brands and you want the experience that resets all the others, this is it. If you're still not sure which one is yours, start with something softer: in our guide to all the brands we tell you where to begin.
How to build your Day Zero trip with MATIE
With the package you lock in your spot for the season even if you don't have a confirmed Day Zero ticket yet, and we handle lodging, round-trip van transportation, MATIE staff throughout the trip, and traveler's insurance with major medical coverage. Getting back from a party that ends at sunrise is the part nobody tells you about ahead of time. That's why transportation is handled, on a fixed schedule, not whenever you can find a cab.
Still deciding between Day Zero and the rest of the season's parties? Here's how each brand feels, so you can pick yours, and what to bring for a full night in the jungle.
Frequently asked questions
When is Day Zero Tulum 2027?
January 9, 2027, sunset to sunrise, in the Tulum jungle. This edition's theme is "Begin Again".
Who is playing Day Zero Tulum 2027?
The lineup, curated by Damian Lazarus, already has 40+ names: besides Lazarus himself, there are &ME, Tiga, Vintage Culture, LP Giobbi, Chloé Caillet, Culoe De Song, Robag Wruhme, Victor Calderone, Jane Fitz and Mita Gami, among others, plus live acts like RPR Soundsystem. The lineup can keep growing before the event.
Is Day Zero the same thing as Zamna?
No. Zamna is a full season with a different brand every night. Day Zero is its own event: one ritual night, curated since 2012 by Damian Lazarus, and it's usually one of the first to sell out.
Is it a good festival for beginners?
We wouldn't recommend it as your first party. A lot of people describe Day Zero as the one that "raises the bar" for every other party: it's intense, it runs all night, and you go in with an open mind. If this is your first time at a Tulum party, start with something softer like RÜFÜS DU SOL or CORE.
What's the age limit?
18 and over only.
Can I book my trip even if Day Zero tickets aren't fully confirmed yet?
Yes. With MATIE you lock in your spot now, and as soon as the ticket and logistics are confirmed, we take care of it for you so all you have to do is show up and live it.
